Dr. Tom Winkler '83

Tom attended OC from 79-83, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. degree in Biology/Chemistry, while also earning the President’s Medal. Tom was involved in many campus roles, including President of Kappa Sigma Tau, President of Alpha Chi, President of Interclub Council, a member of Student Senate, and went on Summer Missions to Belgium and Germany.

After graduating from OC, he attended UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. After earning an M.D. in 87, he completed a Family Medicine Residency at the University of Alabama in 1990. He returned to Dallas in July of 1990 and began practice as a physician for what is now called Family Healthcare Associates. Shortly thereafter, he reconnected with Sharon, a friend from pre-college days, and they married in 1991.

Tom and Sharon have attended Saturn Road church of Christ since 1999, and he has served as an elder since 2016. He served as an officer on the North Texas OC Alumni Chapter for 6 years and has been on the board of directors for Arms of Hope since 2006. Due to a health issue, he has been practicing medicine only part time since 2016. In the fall of 2017, he began his work as Regional Ambassador for the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture, helping further the organization’s mission to promote the theory of Intelligent Design.

Regarding his feelings about OC, Tom states, “My years at OC not only prepared me for medical school, but there were many other blessings. I built lifelong friendships that have persisted to this day. The mission emphasis instilled in me by the OC culture guides my heart in my work with Discovery, my medical practice, and in my role as an elder. I thank God that I went to OC and feel my time there has equipped me to be led by God to participate in Kingdom oriented pursuits.”

Tom and Sharon currently live in Garland. In addition to the above, spare time is spent with family, playing golf, and attending sporting events. They have 3 kids: Jenna Gibson, Becca, and Thomas. Jenna and Thomas both attended OC. Becca lives with them; Jenna lives in Round Rock, and Thomas lives in Oklahoma City.
